LAM DUC MANH
Landscape,
especially Hanoi scene, as a subject for artists is one that seems to be inexhaustible. Lam Duc
Manh is one of the most successful artists on this subject.
Lam Duc Manh's work strikes one immediately by his attention to colour and the narrative of the alleys, the streets, the flower fields, the lakes and the ponds... His paintings express his passion for the city, invigorated by instinctive understanding of the city's unique narrative.
Lam Duc Manh's colour is lighter, less garish than is frequently found in the work of many of his contemporaries. He is interested in the subtlety of hues, tonal variations that add significantly to highlighting the definition of his subject. With this in mind, the trees, for example, seem more delicate than one might expect, yet they remain robust in their character. Lam Duc Manh's landscapes luxuriate all over in verdure. These are Indian- almond trees and shrubs, cabbage flowers and red and golden leaves. This artist soaks every quiet, deserted street, every shabby sidewalk cafe with his imagination of landscape. The surface texture and the light and shadow in the streets and the alleys seem to interact as if alive, yet add to the pleasant stillness and unhurried pace of the places in which Lam Duc Manh has located in his narrative. The reason why we are completely spellbound by Lam Duc Manh's paintings is that each of his landscapes is also a soulscape.
